Don\u2019t be afraid to grind green.<\/strong> Green quests and mobs might yield slightly less experience, but generally provide a much safer leveling experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Use consumables!<\/strong> That Weak Troll\u2019s Blood that you were saving for a special fight doesn\u2019t do much good at the character creation screen after you\u2019ve died. Use everything at your disposal to stay safe and healthy on your adventures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prioritize weapon upgrades.<\/strong> Weapons are generally the single most important piece of gear for survival. A mob that dies faster has less time to do damage and use special abilities on you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Increase your maximum camera distance to 3.9, the maximum factor.<\/strong> Enable this in the Zygor options to allow you to zoom your camera out farther, reducing the risk of being surprised by patrols and potential griefers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enable enemy nameplates.<\/strong> This provides you with a more obvious display of nearby enemy locations and information. Even when obstructed by game terrain, nameplates will often give away enemy positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spend your gold wisely.<\/strong> Reduce frivolous spending and avoid buying less useful class abilities. Prioritize saving gold for your mount and purchasing consumables from vendors. Gold is closely guarded in hardcore, as it is much riskier to grind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Get bags early and empty them often.<\/strong> Keep your inventory clean with as much free bag space as possible for picking up consumables and eliminating excess travel which could get you killed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before every pull, plan an escape path.<\/strong> Your path should be free of patrolling mobs and even neutral NPCs when possible. A misplaced Frost Nova or similar ability can turn a neutral mob hostile and increase the danger of a particular situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pull one mob at a time whenever possible.<\/strong> Pulling multiple mobs is asking for trouble, especially when one or more of them are casters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Casters are death at range.<\/strong> Casters mobs are generally the single most dangerous mob type to your objective. Be wary of hard-hitting spells like Fireball and Pyroblast, as well as various potential CC abilities which can cut off your escape. Spells like Arcane Missiles can still channel on you after you\u2019ve cleared a significant distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Avoid caves and densely populated buildings whenever possible.<\/strong> Due to their very nature, they naturally cut off your escape route when mobs respawn. Likewise, if you group to enter a cave or building, always ensure your hearthstone is ready. Otherwise, you could find yourself in the back of a cave when your partner hearths out and you\u2019re stuck inside with a respawning escape route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stick to the road whenever possible.<\/strong> Avoid riding through groups of mobs while traveling. Getting dazed with a few mobs running after you can quickly lead to death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Avoid going AFK anywhere but a capital city.<\/strong> Even faction camps can be dangerous if someone leads mobs near you. Always assume something hostile is nearby when not in a sanctuary city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep in mind that you are not alone in your travels.<\/strong> For good or ill, you will need to interact with other players. Griefing is always possible. Be wary of any player running towards you with mobs in tow. Even if they have no ill intentions, they could still die and transfer their problem to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before settling in for a play session, warm up for a short period of time<\/strong>. Grind some green mobs and get yourself prepared and focused to reduce your chance of dying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t forget about your racial abilities<\/strong>. A well-timed racial can mean the difference between continuing your adventure and choosing your next starting zone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Buy consumables from vendors whenever you see them.<\/strong> Potions and elixirs are far less common and vastly more expensive in hardcore mode. In hardcore, they are essential survival tools rather than conveniences and are priced and hoarded as such.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep your professions current.<\/strong> Engineering provides numerous sources of escape and crowd control, but avoid using items with unpredictable results. Alchemy can provide a sustainable source of consumables for your leveling grind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t get greedy with gathering professions.<\/strong> Sometimes it\u2019s better to skip that Rich Thorium Vein rather than attempt to gather it without dying to the trio of mobs surrounding it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

If you see areas of erratically placed enemies, search around for stealthed mobs before pulling.<\/strong> Places like Stranglethorn Vale have areas where cats are greatly spread out because between them there are stealthed panthers waiting to cut off your escape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Monitor your surroundings at all times.<\/strong> Watch for patrols, rare spawns, and mobs hiding around objects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Learn the mob leash system!<\/strong> Mobs are leashed to a location and will never disengage you within 15-30 yards of their spawn location. When out of this distance, mobs will run back and reset after a specific amount of time has passed based on their level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Certain actions will reset this timer and cause them to continue attacking you rather than resetting. Successfully hitting a mob, applying a damage-over-time spell, spells that don\u2019t do damage, and resisted\/immune spells all reset the timer. Misses, dodges, parries, DoT damage, reflected spells and passive damage such as Thorns do not. After a recent change, mobs will now automatically reset when they cross a zone border.<\/p>\n\n\n
