Right now I don't think the guides cover the riding trainer or riding mount purchase. When you hit 20 as a monk you should have had a pop up suggestion box appear about the mountain and going there.

Yea, we've never covered getting mounts in the guides, though I would say this is something that would be useful and we will consider adding. As Cabby pointed out, the guide should have made a popup appear when you hit 20 as a monk.

Something popped up/flashed on the screen that had the word riding in it but far too fast to read before it was replaced but I do not know now what replaced it

Perhaps some sort of user settable delay preference or a popup that had to be dismissed would be good for this?
