Sands of Time Recipe - can any one suggest why the following are important -

I have leveled up to 600 on Archeology with a view to getting a Sands of Time recipe from a random drop in a Canopic Jar.

I have seen a Youtube video where a Canopic jar was solved in front of The King in Stromwind, and another Jar solved in front of the Priest - any one know why?

Also - some of the hints on the internet say get teleports set up. I can understand Teleporting to Storm wind and then teleporting to Uldum from the little island near the castle - but why have potions of Potions of Deepholm? - is that because you can use the teleport in Deepholm when the hearth stone is resetting? or am I missing something.

I can only guess at some of the reasons why people do what they do. Standing in front of someone when you open the jar has no bearing on your chances of obtaining the recipe so you can just simply ignore that aspect. The teleport stuff is just to help you get around to the digsites a bit faster.

The main things to keep in mind is that if you look in a jar and it doesn't have the recipe do not remove the item from in the jar. Just close the loot window and put the jar in the bank. When the main patches are release (6.2.1, 6.2.2, 6.3, 6.3.1, etc.) then open up those jars again to look as the loot in the jar gets reset with those patches. You must also have at least Alchemy 525 for the recipe to show up in the jar, you can't get the recipe on one toon and give it to an alchemist toon.

If you are looking for the recipe to simply make the mount for yourself it might be worthwhile to not bother spending the time to farm the jars and just spend the 3k to purchase the sands of time.

Oh - only 3k! Ill have to look at the auction house. Last time I saw on Aerie Peak it was like 20k

I think you're confusing the Sands of Time with the item it is used to create, the Vial of the Sands. The Sands of Time can be purchased for 3k from the Innkeeper Yasmin in Uldum and that is used to make the Vial of the Sands which is the mount that is often sold for around 20k on the AH.
