How important is the invasion point quest to the Argus campaign?

I'm currently on step 227 of the Argus campaign, and it's driving me crazy because when doing the invasion point, when facing the champion, I die almost instantly... even when there are other players there, we can't seem to beat him.

I just want to skip it, but will skipping it make finishing the achievement impossible?

Which achievement are you after? It might be possible to skip the invasions but knowing Blizzard I wouldn't count on it.

You are now prepared, I think is the name. The one that requires you to complete the Argus Campaign so you can unlock Void Elves.

From what I have been able to find you do have to do at least 1 invasion point. Part of the achievement is the War of Light and Shadow section of the Argus campaign and the very first quest in that line is Where They Least Expect It. That quest requires you to enter an invasion point and defeat a Legion commander. I believe that is the only one you have to do.

I posted a message on the discord about this, but do you think it'd be possible to organise Zygor events to get groups together so people can do this step? As invasion content is really designed for a group of players.

That would be very difficult to do with so many different servers and people in every time zone. The best suggestion I can give is to use the in game group finder tool to find a group that is running invasions.
