I think this quest is optional and not required for the Loremaster Achievement.

That is correct. That is a breadcrumb quest to get you started in Ashenvale but if you've already quested in there it won't be available. You'll see a lot of breadcrumb quests that you can't do if you're going back thru the guides to get loremaster. None of the breadcrumb quests count toward the storylines needed for loremaster so you don't have to worry about them.
