As long as you stick to the official sites buying things with a credit card is safe. I never had problems with stolen credit card numbers or anything and I use this payment method on the internet for about 10 years now.

One thing to know is getting a "Fraud Alert" is not because of where you are buying but "what" you are buying. If this is not Characteristic for you to buy than your Credit Card company thinks someone else is using your card instead of you. Here is a brief description of Fraud Alert.

"A fraud alert is a warning provided to a consumer or business by a credit monitoring agency notifying the customer of a potential identity theft attempt. Often a financial institution will monitor the buying habits of a customer, notifying them of an uncharacteristic purchase made by their credit card. "
