as a paladin i tried to equip a better item, light mail armor, but the guide preferred wolf hunter's vest, of much lower specs.
it works most of the time, but you have indeed to keep an eye on it. once it is finished, it will be a heck of a tool!
EDIT: i think one possible explanation is that the tool looks at the specs en tries to match them to the class. so , for instance, a better weapon is not used because its specs are more useful to a hunter (agility) than to a paladin. that does not explain the first quirk though.
