Upgrade strategy

I have a couple of mid-level characters that still have a list of quests that no longer exist or have been eliminated on the Zygor guide. Has anyone got a good strategy for picking up a character like this? Is it best to just abandon all existing quests and back up a level (or 2) in the guide to get started with the new quests?
