Okay, according to the patch notes for 3.3, addons now how the ability to query the server and get a list of completed quests. What I'd like to suggest is an addon (either independant or part of the guides itself) that gets the list of completed quests from the server, and goes through the guide (from level 1) until it finds a quest that hasn't been completed.
It could be configurable to ignore quests that are under a certain level in the guides, etc but I think it'd make getting into the guides with an existing character easier.
