Im on mac 10.9.5, i've installed java, and yet the client wont open, it starts to open, a small grey window opens with a green download bar, this download bar runs to end, then it closes, this is as far as it ever gets

Did you restart your computer after you installed java? There are two components to the client: a launcher that checks for updates prior to starting the client, and the actual client itself. If Java doesn't get setup properly, the launcher may not be able to startup the actual client.
Side note, do you get this download every single time you try to run it?
