Well im using a bear which is really good because it can take alot of damage and still dish it out plus its good at keeping aggro so you can focus of your ranged attacks.

When I leveled my hunter I got the best results early on using bears and gorillas. They could deliver some damage while taking it as well. Kind of like your own personal tank. Cats, raptors, and wolves did good damge but weren't to sturdy, at least until I hit 60 I got me a devilsaur (Beast Mastery only). Turtles were the the exact opposite.

wolves all the way, best dps pet in the game. The aim of leveling fast should be burning down enemies fast, and I have only had to revive my wolf once (myself none) in 50+ levels so far.

You want something to tank for you; it was a bear or gorilla for me. When you start doing dungeons, get a DPS pet like a cat of some sort -- these won't hold agro while you're soloing, though, which IMO you need. (I've only gotten to 62 with my BM hunter).

Yes, for solo leveling get a bear or gorilla, something from the Tenacity family of pets. For running dungeons grab a wolf because their howl boosts your ranged attack power for better dps.
